MEDICATION-ASSISTED TREATMENT (MAT)

The use of medication and therapy to overcome addiction.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

For many people struggling with addiction, the toughest step towards recovery is the very first one: acknowledging the addiction. Eastern Iowa Health Center is here to help. Medication-Assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies. It is effective in the treatment of opioid, alcohol, and other substance-abuse disorders. It can help individuals be more successful in recovery.

We work in partnership with area partners to offer this treatment to our patients. EIHC provides medication management and primary care, and with partnership provides Cognitive Behavioral Treatment or talk therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

What conditions does MAT treat?

Common conditions that MAT treats include opioid addiction, alcohol use disorder, and tobacco use.

How long does MAT treatment take?

The treatment time varies from person to person, depending on their condition. There is no maximum recommended duration of treatment, and for some patients, treatment may continue indefinitely.

Does a person with addiction just need to take the prescribed medication?

Medication alone is not sufficient. MAT is intended as a whole-patient approach for those with substance use disorder.  A patient can be on medication, but must also be involved in other counseling and recovery activities to complement the medication and achieve the best success to recovery.

Isn’t it better to choose abstinence instead?

While abstinence may work for some, MAT is an effective treatment option which is evidence-based and is often recommended as the first line of treatment for addiction.
