IDPH Statement on Texas Ebola Case

Due to statewide media interest in the Texas Ebola case announced by the CDC yesterday, the Iowa Department of Public Health has issued the following statement:

News about Ebola can be scary and it is understandable that Iowans are concerned a case of Ebola could occur in Iowa as it has in Texas; however, there is a world of difference between the U.S. and the parts of Africa where Ebola is spreading. The U.S. and Iowa have a strong health care system and public health professionals who are prepared to respond to infectious diseases, even diseases like Ebola, which can cause a great deal of public concern.

It’s important to remember Ebola is not a virus spread through the air, and is only contagious if the infected person is having active symptoms. Ebola is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids of a sick person or exposure to objects such as needles that have been contaminated.

IDPH recognizes that even a single case of Ebola diagnosed in the United States can raise concerns locally. IDPH has been and will continue to work closely with CDC and local public health agencies to ensure the state is ready to respond should the need arise.

Eastern Iowa Health Center is introducing a new sports program available to families at no cost!

Eastern Iowa Health Center is introducing a new sports program available to families at no cost!

The Eastern Iowa Soccer Club will be offering a fun recreational soccer club experience for children 5-11 years old starting in the month of May 2014.

May 4, 2014 is opening day, weather permitting. We have reserved fields at VanVechten Park in Cedar Rapids on Sunday afternoons from 3:00 PM to 5:00PM.

Some of the many benefits of our soccer program will be to help children become active and knowledgeable about healthy eating and exercise habits, develop new friendships, work together as part of a team, and improve self-esteem. Although there is no charge for joining the program, we are asking for a commitment from parents to participate in healthy activities.  These activities may include things such as actively partnering with a primary care physician, completing recommended cancer screenings and participating in health/nutrition education.   All requirements may be met during the time the children are practicing for their soccer matches. (Although patients are not able to be seen be a primary care physician, we can assist them in connecting with Eastern Iowa Health Center and our group of family physicians.)

This activity is sponsored by EIHC and a grant from the American Cancer Society.

For more information, please contact Sheree Murphy, BSN, MD, Director of Care Coordination Eastern Iowa Health Center: 319-730-7300 or email: smurphy@eihc.co
