Eastern Iowa Health Center Awarded $1.27M in Funding and Quality Awards

Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Eastern Iowa Health Center (EIHC), a comprehensive primary health care service provider in Eastern Iowa, announced today that it has received funding awards from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), including $1,000,000 for facilities improvements and $255,988 for the hiring of additional staff.

HRSA grants these awards to support health centers nationwide in providing primary care services to those who need them most.

Eastern Iowa Health Center’s CEO Joe Lock said the planned renovations for EIHC include increasing exam rooms by 25%, ADA compliance, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the facility, and improving patient access.

The second grant awarded to EIHC allows the center to expand its service offerings with the hiring of additional health care professionals. Lock said EIHC will hire a new Family Practice Nurse Practitioner, a new Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and another nurse.

The funding award comes on the heels of a recent $22,000 Quality Improvement Award, recognizing the EIHC for achievements in providing high quality, comprehensive care services to those who need them the most.

“Beyond the honor of being distinguished for commitment and quality care,” said Lock, “these awards renew vigor for our mission, and I’m proud and appreciative for all the hard work our staff puts forth every day with their service for our patients, for EIHC, and for our community.”

IDPH Statement on Texas Ebola Case

Due to statewide media interest in the Texas Ebola case announced by the CDC yesterday, the Iowa Department of Public Health has issued the following statement:

News about Ebola can be scary and it is understandable that Iowans are concerned a case of Ebola could occur in Iowa as it has in Texas; however, there is a world of difference between the U.S. and the parts of Africa where Ebola is spreading. The U.S. and Iowa have a strong health care system and public health professionals who are prepared to respond to infectious diseases, even diseases like Ebola, which can cause a great deal of public concern.

It’s important to remember Ebola is not a virus spread through the air, and is only contagious if the infected person is having active symptoms. Ebola is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids of a sick person or exposure to objects such as needles that have been contaminated.

IDPH recognizes that even a single case of Ebola diagnosed in the United States can raise concerns locally. IDPH has been and will continue to work closely with CDC and local public health agencies to ensure the state is ready to respond should the need arise.
